It’s Black Friday so we must shop! With that in mind, I went into town especially to find this rather special store.
It’s designed beautifully. The walls are decorated with large, colourful portraits and in the centre, there is just one table of products.
The portraits are of refugees and the items on the table are for you to buy – for them, not for you! You’ll get your dose of retail therapy but leave with nothing. Good for declutterers!
The table is split into three sections – Arrival, Camp and Future. The items might seem ordinary to us (a can opener, some shampoo…) but to Refugees who have nothing, they are essential. You can buy some hot food for as little as £3, or if you have £500 burning a hole in your pocket, you can buy the WHOLE STORE.
Help Refugees was formed by a group of friends in 2015. Two years on, they support over 80 projects and have helped over 600,00 people across 10 countries. The concept and design of the store was developed by my friends at Glimpse. Together with Help Refugees, they wanted to create something different around Christmas shopping. Instead of a store selling candles and novelty socks, people can buy basic items that could make a real difference to someone’s life. And Black Friday seemed like an ideal launch date for a new store.
You can find out more and shop online at www.choose.love but if you’re in London, go say hi and spend some money. CHOOSE LOVE is at 18 Broadwick Street (on the corner with Berwick St). The staff are friendly and happy to help if you have any questions, and able to process your payment on their tablets (think Apple store).
Go shop to your heart’s content – guilt free!
